Sazani Trust Zanzibar (STZ)

Empowering women, young people and rural communities across Zanzibar

Sazani Trust Zanzibar (STZ) is dedicated to improving the lives of young people through education for sustainable development, with a strong focus on gender equality and social inclusion. Founded in 2015, STZ works to advance inclusive education, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental resilience across the Zanzibar archipelago.

Through a long-standing partnership with Sazani Associates, the Trust delivers teacher training, youth enterprise programmes, community-based conservation initiatives, and flagship projects such as the Healthy and Sustainable Schools Programme, TESOL, and the Blue Economy Zanzibar Archipelago Mangrove Project (ZAMP).

Our shared mission is to empower communities, especially young people and women, through life skills, digital inclusion, and nature-based solutions.

Sustainable livelihoods

Through Sazani Associates' proprietary initiatives like the Attitude, Behaviour, and Competence (ABC) project and the Healthy and Sustainable Schools Project (HSSP), Sazani Trust introduces students to essential life skills, from environmental leadership to teamwork, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation. These programmes help young people turn ideas into action and passions into purpose, setting them on a path to becoming confident, capable, and compassionate members of their communities.

Youth empowerment & life skills

In schools and communities across Zanzibar, Sazani Trust delivers practical life-skills programmes that help young people build confidence, resilience, and purpose. Through hands-on learning, environmental awareness, and opportunities to develop enterprise ideas, we equip students with the tools they need to shape their futures and become active contributors to their communities.

“Sazani helped me believe in my ideas and taught me how to make them a reality...”

In 2021, Shadya joined Sazani in Form Three, quickly standing out for her creativity in recycling initiatives. She
transformed plastic and paper waste into beautiful hand-crafted mirrors, gaining the confidence and skills that would fuel her entrepreneurial journey. She is now studying for a Diploma in Primary Education at Universal Polytechnic Vocational College and has won awards in both a national Women Innovators Competition and Sazani’s CERI Pitch Idea Programme. Her venture, Mama’s Craft, is a digital marketplace that empowers women artisans by connecting them to fairer and wider markets.

“Sazani gave me the foundation to follow my passion and create a career...”

In 2019, Abdulbasti joined the Sazani Club in Form One at Mtoni Kigomeni Secondary School. His interest in sustainability flourished through the ABC and HSSP projects, where he addressed plastic waste and developed a thriving vegetable garden. During this time, he began experimenting with spicy homemade pickles like rojo and sambaro, which quickly gained local popularity. Inspired by his success, he pursued Culinary Arts at the State University of Zanzibar in 2023. Today, he works at the prestigious Zanzi Blue Hotel in Kiwengwa, North A District.

Together, we can build brighter futures for communities across Zanzibar.
