Our approach to impact
Our approach to impact recognises communities as complex social systems. We focus on stronger livelihoods, improved learning, inclusive governance and healthier ecosystems, shaped by local priorities, power dynamics and long-term resilience.

Since 2005, Sazani Associates has worked with schools, communities and partners in diverse contexts. Through our Global Social Learning (GSL) approach, we support people and institutions to analyse challenges, navigate trade-offs and co-create responses that strengthen governance, livelihoods and learning, and contribute to more resilient futures.

Case study: Sustainable Natural Resources Management Plan (SNRMP) Ethiopia
Sazani Associates developed a community-led Sustainable Natural Resource Management Plan alongside an active gold mining operation in Ethiopia.

Using a Global Social Learning approach, the plan integrated natural resource governance, ecosystem restoration and diversified livelihoods through participatory mapping, multistakeholder dialogue and adaptive learning.
The approach strengthened social licence, supported climate-resilient livelihoods and established credible, locally grounded pathways for long-term environmental stewardship, earning international recognition at Indaba, winning their Nature Award in 2023.

Case study: Healthy & Sustainable Schools Programme (HSSP), Zanzibar
Sazani supported a whole-school approach to healthy and sustainable learning, embedding lesson study and Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) within participatory, student-centred pedagogy across all participating schools. Teacher competencies were strengthened through collaborative planning, observation and reflection, supporting more inclusive and responsive classroom practice.

Student agency was a core outcome. More than 100 Student Action Groups were established, delivering initiatives including school gardens, breakfast clubs, mangrove rehabilitation and recycling. These activities linked learning to real-world challenges, increasing student engagement and confidence, particularly among previously low-achieving learners.
Healthy and Sustainable Schools Programme (HSSP) content is now embedded in school development plans and continues to expand.
