Some of our past projects

Bumbuna.PNG

Seli Resettlement Planning, Sierra Leone

2017-2020: Sazani Associates supported the participatory design of a Resettlement Action Plan for communities affected by Bumbuna II hydropower expansion. Using PLA and livelihood systems analysis, Sazani Associates co-developed strategies for compensation, land access, and restoration. Community mapping and scenario planning enabled households to shape solutions and future options. The process aligned with IFC safeguards and advanced a rights-based approach to infrastructure development in West Africa, promoting inclusive, sustainable outcomes for affected communities.

Indigenous Peoples and Community Development Planning, Cameroon

2008/9: Sazani Associates developed an Indigenous Peoples and Community Development Plan for Bakola communities affected by transmission infrastructure in southern Cameroon. Using participatory action learning and traditional ecological knowledge, Sazani Associates facilitated land-use mapping, culturally grounded consultations, and benefit-sharing strategies aligned with international safeguards. This enabled Bakola communities to shape resettlement processes and support long-term development and rights recognition, setting a precedent for adaptive approaches in infrastructure projects involving Indigenous peoples across Africa.

Port Honduras Community Development Plan, Belize

2011/12: Under a USAID–GTZ initiative, Sazani Associates facilitated participatory planning for the Port Honduras region, a climate-vulnerable coast in southern Belize. Using PLA tools and natural resource mapping, Sazani Associates co-created a community-focused development plan balancing marine conservation, youth priorities, and sustainable livelihoods. The approach embedded resilience into local governance and guided early blue economy investments, coastal resource management, and inclusive economic planning, strengthening community-led decision-making and sustainable development across the Caribbean.

South Resilience and Social Inclusion, Bulgaria

2014-2016: In Bulgaria, Sazani Associates supported marginalised youth in economically transitioning regions through the SPOC initiative. Using participatory storytelling, civic engagement tools, and health equity mapping, Sazani Associates helped young people design peer-led responses to exclusion. The approach fostered youth agency, strengthened local coalitions, and aligned with EU cohesion policy. This PLA-based model advanced inclusive resilience in post-transition settings and contributed to Sazani Associates' Global Social Learning practice on education for transformation.

Education for Rural People, Global

Between 2006-2012: An UNESCO-FAO Flagship on rural education, inspired by the Nyéléni Declaration. Sazani Associates partnered in two EuropeAid-funded consortia across ten countries, linking education, agroecology, and rural livelihoods. Sazani Associates co-created training and curricula with schools and CSOs using participatory action learning. The programme strengthened cross-regional solidarity, embedded food sovereignty in education, and built community resilience through intergenerational Global Social Learning, serving as a model for locally rooted, globally connected education.

Sazani Associates is an international organisation working at the intersection of education, sustainability and social performance. Since 2005, we have partnered globally to support inclusive education, resilient livelihoods and nature-based solutions in complex social contexts, where community dynamics, governance and legitimacy shape long-term outcomes.
