2006-2010: Expansion
Over this five-year period, Sazani Associates expanded its reach and deepened its impact across education, community development, and sustainability. In collaboration with Samaki Consulting and UNFPA, Sazani supported secondary education in Zanzibar by developing geography teaching guides on moral ethics and environmental studies, building on its involvement in the ERP Community of Practice. In Cameroon, Sazani provided technical advisory services to AES Sonel, preparing an Indigenous Peoples and Community Development Plan for the Bakola communities affected by transmission infrastructure development.
With support from the British Council and DFID, the ERP model was extended to connect 27 schools in Wales with 27 in Zanzibar, combining in-service teacher training with curriculum-linked projects on sustainable development and global citizenship. In the UK and Ireland, Sazani carried out social research projects for the Milford Haven Port Authority and the Council for Racial Equality in Northern Ireland, assessing local attitudes and perceptions on environmental issues and migration.
Funding from Europe Aid enabled Sazani to lead a ten-country partnership across Europe, Africa, and Latin America focused on education for rural livelihoods and food sovereignty, rooted in the principles of the Nyéléni Declaration. Meanwhile, as a registered Tenant Empowerment Grant Agent for the Welsh Government, Sazani supported tenant associations to improve community life and living standards.
The Global Learners as Educators in Wales (GLEW) project, delivered in partnership with the Workers Education Association, enhanced the capacity of formal and informal educators to integrate global learning into teaching practice across multiple Welsh regions. A strategic partnership was also developed with the Development Education Research Centre at the Institute of Education, University of London (now UCL), reinforcing Sazani’s research-informed approach.
In Zanzibar, Sazani launched the Comic Relief and UKAID-funded Zanzibar Enterprise and Employability Training (ZEET) project, promoting sustainable rural enterprises and responsible tourism. Inspired by the Welsh Healthy Schools Initiative and in response to requests from Zanzibari teachers, Sazani worked with the Ministries of Health and Education in Zanzibar to develop the Healthy and Sustainable Schools programme, supported by Wales Public Health.
