Dr Ian Clegg

Founding Director

Ian is a retired academic with over 30 years’ experience advising FCDO on criminal justice, children’s rights, and juvenile justice, particularly in the MENA region. He supported the Jordanian Ministry of Social Development in integrating child protection into national policy. Fluent in English and French, Ian also brings a passion for ornithology, having led Sazani’s avian biodiversity mapping project in Zanzibar. His expertise bridges policy, rights-based development, and environmental conservation.

Ewan Smout

Research & Data Officer

Ewan holds a BSc in Geography and an MSc in Remote Sensing and GIS. As Research & Data Officer at Sazani Associates, he supports projects by managing remote sensing data, coding, and GIS analysis. Ewan identifies new data sources and applications to enhance Sazani’s global work. His passion for the environment and natural world drives his understanding of the intersection between physical and social geography, helping to bridge challenges between social and physical sciences.

Ada Civitani

Social Enterprise and Education Advisor

Ada specialises in education and capacity-building needs assessments, focusing on formal and informal education, women, youth, and migrants. She has planned and monitored research in West Africa and Latin America. Fluent in Italian, French, and Spanish, Ada coordinates international advocacy networks and serves on EU and UN policy advisory groups on food security and rural development.

Dr Chris Horrill (RIP)

The passing of Chris Horrill in March 2025 was a profound loss to all who knew and worked with him. A respected leader in sustainable coastal and natural resource management, Chris dedicated over 30 years to shaping innovative approaches to managing coastal zones and river basins across the UK and Africa, working with international agencies and NGOs on complex development projects.

The team at Sazani are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and colleague.
