1. What is the CERI Volunteer Program?

The Coastal Education and Reforestation Initiative (CERI) is a volunteer program by Sazani Associates  and the Sazani Trust focused on restoring coastal ecosystems and promoting sustainable livelihoods in Zanzibar.

2. Who can volunteer for the CERI program?

The program is open to individuals aged 18 and above who are passionate about environmental conservation and community development. We particularly encourage applications from young people and recent graduates.

3. How long is the CERI volunteer program?

The program typically lasts for 2 to 4 weeks, with flexible start dates to accommodate volunteers' schedules.

4. What kind of activities will I be involved in?

Volunteers participate in activities such as mangrove rehabilitation, environmental and road safety education, community outreach, and sustainable livelihood projects. Specific tasks may include planting mangroves, conducting biodiversity surveys, and organizing educational workshops.

5. Do I need any special skills or qualifications to join?

No specific skills are required, but a background in environmental science, education, or community development can be beneficial. The most important qualities are enthusiasm, adaptability, and a willingness to learn.

6. What support will I receive during the program?

Volunteers receive comprehensive support including orientation, training, accommodation, meals, local transportation, and ongoing guidance from our team. We also assist with travel arrangements such as flight itineraries, visas, and insurance.

7. Where will I stay during the program?

Accommodation is provided at comfortable guesthouses and lodges near project sites, offering a safe and welcoming environment. Single and shared rooms available. Vegan, vegetarian and celiac dietary requirements can be catered for.

8.  What health services and facilities are available?

There are a number of Governmental and private health clinics and hospitals on the islands. Sazani recommend taking out travel insurance that includes health insurance, for your stay.

9. How much does it cost to volunteer with CERI?

The program fee is £900 for a two-week stay. This fee covers accommodation, food, activities, and local transportation. All proceeds go directly towards supporting our projects in Zanzibar.

10. What should I bring with me?

Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor activities, a hat and sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and any personal items they may need. Detailed packing lists are provided upon acceptance.

11. Will there be any free time or leisure activities?

Yes, volunteers have free time to relax and explore Zanzibar. Weekend trips and cultural excursions, such as visits to Chumbe Island and spice tours, are also included in the itinerary.
